With his angular features, spiky hair, and single ear piercing, Ilkka Jarvilaturi can come across like a Finnish Mick Jagger, or even David Bowie. His striking demeanor is befitting of this truly world-class director, whose first film, HOMEBOUND, screened at the cream of the crop of international festivals, including Berlin, Venice, and MOMA's "New Directors, New Films." On top of that, it was awarded the Nordic Film Prize for Best Scandinacian Feature of 1990, The Grand Prix du Public in Belfort, and "Best Feature Film" at the Salzburg FilmSZENE.
The intrepid Finn followed up this stunning debut by crossing the Baltic Sea to the small country of Estonia, where he and a cast including "the dog from Tarkovsky's STALKER", filmed the even more lauded "Darkness in Tallin," now called CITY UNPLUGGED. IndiePix is pleased to have worked for months to distribute this fine film on DVD, newly packaged and filled with extra features. "Darkness in Tallin," a heist film tinged with black comedy and political commentary, captured the hearts of everyone from the NY Post's V.A. Musetto to TRAINSPOTTING director Danny Boyle, who named the film one of his Top 5 films of the year. As for festivals, the caper hit Sundance and Cannes, and won both the esteemed Fassbinder Prize at Mannheim Film Festival and a Silver Alexander at Thessaloniki Film Festival. It went on to be distributed theatrically in over 30 countries, and just recently premiered for the first time in the country of its production, Estonia.
Jarvillaturi's third and most recent film, SPY GAMES, aka HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT", starring Bill Pullman and Irène Jacob premiered as a Special Presentation at the Toronto Film Festival and is currently in worldwide distribution via Lions Gate Entertainment (U.S.) and J&M Entertainment. He is currently in pre-production on his next feature, a pulled from the headlines actioner set to film in Beijing.
Jarvillaturi is a long-time downtown New Yorker, who can't pass up a good cheeseburger from L'Odeon. IndiePix Films is proud to have such an international man of mystery and cinematic prowess on our roster of "Spotlight Films." |
