ilkka Jarvilaturi is a film director, screenwriter and producer native to Finland. He studied contemporary literature and acting in Helsinki before earning an MFA in film directing. Jarvilaturi's debut feature “Homebound” screened at the MoMA New Directors New Films series. “Homebound” won numerous awards including, the Nordic Film Prize for the Best Scandinavian Feature or 1990; the Grand Prix du public in Belfont, France, and Best Feature Film at the Salzburg FilmSZENE.
Jarvilaturi's “City Unplugged” (aka Darkness in Tallinn) won the Fassbinder Prize at Mannheim and a Silver Alexander in Thessaloniki. “City Unplugged” opened in New York in June of '95 after having successful runs in many European countries, and has become an arthouse favorite in numerous other cities. Jarvilaturi's last picture “Spy Games/History Is Made at Night”for Nik Powell and Stephen Woolley's Scala Productions premiered as a special presentation at the Toronto Film Festival, and is distributed in the U.S. By Lions Gate and by J&M Entertainment overseas.
Jarvilaturi is founder and CEO of Upstream Pictures of which he established in 1991. He is a member of the European Film Academy, and the Directors and Writers' Guilds of Finland. Jarvilaturi is no working on his latest features, The Innocents” and “The Futurists”.
