IndiePix Studios Goes International

Studios films 21 BELOW and P-STAR RISING recently celebrated their international premieres at the Hot Docs International Documentary Festival in Toronto (see Danielle's re-cap for the full story or read her blog here. Packed houses and supportive audiences that attended our screenings exemplified why Hot Docs is one of our favorites. Special thanks to Sean Farnel for inviting the films to be a part of such a prestigious film festival. Highlights of the week included the "cast" from 21 BELOW seeing the film in public for the first time. While 21 BELOW was certainly not the easiest film for them to watch, the audiences couldn't have been more warm and supportive. This experience tied with the post screening experience of the first P-STAR RISING screening. Priscilla (P-Star) and her father's plane was delayed which forced them to miss the screening and Q&A; the audience was just leaving the theater as the two pulled up to the cinema in a car. Priscilla got out and did an impromptu rap on the street, and then participated in a lively Q&A outside for a crowd of 40 people.

You can see 21 BELOW, P-STAR RISING and ENTRE NOS at the Newport International Film Festival in Newport, Rhode Island from June 4 - 7. 21 BELOW is also an Official Selection of the Silverdocs Documentary Film Festival in Silver Springs, MD from June 15 - 22.

We will have big distribution news to share about all three of the IndiePix Studios releases very soon!

KK Downey Comes to IndiePix

IndiePix Films has acquired the rights to Pat Kiely and Darren Curtis' WHO IS KK DOWNEY? The indie-comedy revolves around two hipster friends who pretend to be a writer with a troubled past in their quest for fame. The film was written and directed by members of the Montreal comedy troupe Kidnapper Films. Several members also act in the film. Just off of a successful run in Canada, KK DOWNEY has experienced a rich festival life and praising critical support. IndiePix will shop the film to potential broadcast partners before releasing the film on DVD.

Dominick Dunne Launches Retail Distribution with Borders In-Store Event

This month, IndiePix is proud to release for the first time in the United States DOMINICK DUNNE: AFTER THE PARTY. This incredible documetary outlines the life of columnist, journalist and TV personality Dominick Dunne, who has spent over thirty years in and out of the public eye. And in honor of the film's release and his life's work, IndiePix is sponsoring a special evening with Mr. Dunne, at the Borders in Columbus Circle.

On Monday, June 22nd at 7pm, Dominick Dunne will visit with fans at the Borders Store here in Manhattan. He'll sign autographs of some of his books and DVDs of the film, and will appear with the documentary's co-director, Kirsty de Garis, for a Q&A discussion on the film and his amazing life story. Stay in touch with the newsletter and upcoming blog posts for more information, and the announcement of some additonal surprise guests!

THE LEAST OF THESE Plays Capitol Hill

The scope of interest in our incredibly moving documentary on family detention here in the US continues to expand. IndiePix is thrilled to announce that THE LEAST OF THESE will have an exclusive screening on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, June 10th. An honor not bestowed on many films, THE LEAST OF THESE will be screening directly for members of the government who have the ability to affect the lives of these detainees. The screening is co-sponsored by the Women's Refugee Commission and word here in the office is that there will be room for a select few of the public at this screening. Interested parties should email Sharita Gruber for information. Look to the blog for updates as we get closer to this fantastic event!

HOT DOCS Proves A Hotbed of Nonfiction Films

Though Team IndiePix was consumed with supporting the incredible screenings of our two Studios films (21 BELOW and P-STAR RISING), we also had time to catch a few new flicks, ripe for the picking. Among the highlights were Ondi Timoner's WE LIVE IN PUBLIC, which has been garnering much hubbub and attention since it took the major Documentary Jury Award at Sundance. The film, about the rise and fall of internet mogul and social networking experimenter Josh Gilbert, is a fascinating look at someone who both anticipated our Facbook/Twitter culture and was ultimately destroyed by it. Other standouts were ANTOINE, about an extraordinary blind boy; ALWYN, a short documentary made by a Toronto teenager with colon cancer; and the first North American incarnation of BritDocs The Good Pitch, which brought together social issue filmmakers with funders, buyers, and relevent NGOs. (IndiePix Studios' Ryan Harrington sat at the table).

IN A DREAM Continues Successful Theatrical Run

Jeremiah Zagar's acclaimed IN A DREAM continues to attract praise and audiences throughout the country, starting with a successful run at Santa Fe's Center for Contemporary Arts on the first of May, then extended an extra week to play there for half the month. Other successful runs were in suburban Philadelphia (Doylestown, Ambler and Cryan Mawr, where it was also extended), Salt Lake City, Utah's Tower Theatre, the Tropical Cinema in Key West, and Webster University in St. Louis. In June the film's run gets even hotter, hitting major arthouses in Chicago, Portland, Seattle, Boston and even Anchorage, Alaska!

JOHNNY BERLIN 2 Plays The Flaherty Seminar Film Series

Dominic DeJoseph's charming sequel to his original one-man documentary hit, JOHNNY BERLIN, played to a packed house at the Anthology Film Archives on May 11th, part of the Flaherty Seminar's FLAHERTY NYC monthly screening series. The film, which picks up with Johnny after he has gambled away most of his life savings in Cambodia, is a compelling half-funny, half-tragic existential study. The delighted audience stayed for a post-screening Q&A discussion, moderated by Shooting People's inimitable Ingrid Kopp. Buy your copy of this unique film here.

The Critics are Crowing for AUDIENCE OF ONE!

Last month, IndiePix sponsored a theatrical run for Michael Jacobs' documentary AUDIENCE OF ONE at the Anthology Film Archives in New York City. And the reviews poured in! We are so proud of the film, we had to share excerpts from a couple of our favorite reviews.

"Somewhere above us, God is watching Audience of One and chuckling. Mere mortals will be doing likewise." V.A. Musetto, New York Post

"Too good to be missed." Sara Schieron, Boxoffice Magazine

"Four Stars. Critic's Pick!" Time Out New York

"Here we are in the real world, watching real people in situations so head-spinning that the reality of it only contributes to our bafflement." Michael Tully, Hammer to Nail

Take a moment to learn more about the film or purchase it on IndiePix, or add it to your Queue on Netflix. You won't be disappointed!
