Every Good Thing to Rust NYC Premiere! |
|
|
|
 |
| |
April 29, 2008 - New York City, April 10th, 2008 – Every Good Thing to Rust, the debut feature film by Glens Falls Filmmaker John W. Yost, will premiere in NYC on April 30th, 2008 at 9 P.M. at the Anthology Film Archives, 32 Second Ave. New York, NY. The film is the featured narrative in this latest edition of the NewFilmmakers Series, which began in 1998 and over the past ten years has screened over 500 features and 2000 short films.
The night's screening will begin with a documentary and a shorts program focused on fantasty and horror, and will end with a Q&A with the director. IndiePix, a New York based distributor of independent films, recently announced its partnership with the director to make the film available to a wider audience. The DVD version distributed by Indiepix includes trailers and commentary with the director and principle cast, and will be available for purchase following the screening.
Indiepix also offers Every Good Thing to Rust through its DiscFactory software, which allows users to download the film and burn it to a DVD for home viewing. Yost is excited about using this patented technology for his film. “This is actually filling that missing piece that the [RUST] website doesn’t fill. You no longer need to watch the film in front of your computer; you can burn it straight to disc for living room viewing.”
For more information on the screening please contact John W. Yost at (518) 832-6716 or name5026@yahoo.com or Jason Tyrrell at jason@indiepix.net. Images and screeners for review are available upon request. IndiePix Films launches new Nonfiction Awards |
|
|
|
 |
| |
January 10, 2008 - Excerpts of the Indiewire press release
A new nonfiction filmmaking award, recognizing the wide breadth of the genre and also specific crafts such as cinematography and editing is being created from within the documentary community. The inaugural event, honoring films from 2007, will be held on March 18, 2008 at the IFC Center in New York City. The awards are to be co-chaired by filmmaker AJ Schnack (director of KURT COBAIN ABOUT A SON?) and Thom Powers, Documentary Programmer of the Toronto International Film Festival.
Nominees in 8 categories will be announced on January 20, 2008 at an event for press and the documentary community in Park City, UT (coinciding with the Sundance Film Festival). On that date further details will be revealed about the award, including its official name.
Fifteen films have been shortlisted in the category of Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Filmmaking by a blue-ribbon nominating committee of 12 programmers from North America's top film festivals who are esteemed for their specialization in documentary. Those films are:
"Billy the Kid"
"Deep Water"
"The Devil Came on Horseback"
"Ghosts of Cite Soleil"
"In the Shadow of the Moon"
"Into Great Silence"
"Lake of Fire"
"Manda Bala (Send a Bullet)"
"Manufactured Landscapes"
"The Monastery - Mr. Vig and the Nun"
"No End in Sight"
"Sicko"
"Taxi to the Dark Side"
"The Unforeseen"
"Zoo"
The idea for the awards was born out of vigorous debate in the documentary community chronicled by Mr. Schnack on his popular nonfiction film blog All these wonderful things. His call for recognizing documentaries based on filmmaking craft and creativity engendered a groundswell of support that resulted in a coalition, including the participation of IndiePix, to support the venture.
Mr. Schnack said, "Many of us feel that there is often a gap between the films that have impacted the year in nonfiction filmmaking and those films recognized at year's end. This was particularly true in this past year, which saw such strong advancement in filmmaking craft. We believe that the time is right to acknowledge the vision and innovation of the filmmakers and craftspersons within the broad field of nonfiction, no matter the subject." As the award co-chair, Mr. Schnack has withheld his 2007 film 'Kurt Cobain About a Son' from award consideration to avoid any conflict of interest.
Bob Alexander, President of IndiePix, said that: "Over the last year, we have had the opportunity to work with a number of nonfiction filmmakers whose dedication to the art and craft of their films is unparalleled. We are very pleased to be able to contribute to the organization of these awards, to support the concept of superior craft in nonfiction filmmaking, and to bring our full suite of internet technologies to support this event." Mr. Alexander said that Danielle DiGiacomo, the coordinator for Documentary Films at IndiePix, will be the point person for the Company's involvement.
Schnack added, "IndiePix, as a forward-thinking company that has proven dedicated to celebrating the best in independent film, is the perfect partner for this project."
The nominating committee will select nominees in 8 categories (see the list below) from a list of 76 eligible films. The winners will be chosen by a larger voting pool selected from within the documentary community of top filmmakers, distributors, programmers and writers. Voting will take place beginning in February 2008. Voting will be conducted by secure internet transactions on the IndiePix website.
Mr. Powers said, "In choosing voters, we are putting a premium on who watches the most documentaries. Rather than look to outside groups for validation, this is an honor from within the community."

January 7, 2008 - Inexplicable disorder. Televisions off-air. Humans ravaging each other for scraps of food and weapons. This is the turn that life takes for three friends trying to find their place in post-9-11 America. Elegantly shot in crisp HD, this dark, eerie portrait of societal meltdown questions the loyalties of friendship and challenges all illusions of safety and order.
IndiePix is thrilled to welcome John W. Yost into the fold, and provide the highest quality DVD and download-to-own distribution for Every Good Thing to Rust. The IndiePix release of the film will also include trailers, a commentary track with the director and lead actor, production stills, and more.
After production of Every Good Thing to Rust, Filmmaker John W. Yost chose to forgo the festival circuit and offer the entire film as a download, so that any fan of independent film would have access. Check out his website, www.everygoodthingtorust.com, for his fantastic blog about the decision. As well as giving away his movie to any with a computer, Mr. Yost has found a way for his film to make a larger, positive difference in the community. During the month of December John teamed up with several diverse venues in upstate New York to screen the film and raise money for the Homeless and Traveler's Aid Society of the Capital District. The four screenings were very successful, raising some much needed and very appreciated funds. HATAS works with the community's impoverished, helpless, and homeless by offering more than just a handout, but by helping them lead normal lives, one step at a time.

Opening Night Film at Woodstock Fest 2007 |

October 11, 2007 - "The Fiddle and the Drum" was a meditative dance piece choreographed to Joni Mitchell. Joni and internationally acclaimed choreographer Jean Grand-Maître of the Alberta Ballet Company collaborated to create The Fiddle and The Drum, an engaging performance spectacle combining three art forms; music, dance and art; which Joni calls "the best project of my career." Produced by Joe Media Group of Calgary in association with Bravo!, The Fiddle and The Drum, which premieres October 22 at 8pm ET / 5pm PT, showcases Mitchell's life-long concerns regarding environmental neglect and the warring nature of mankind. Mitchell's provocative music served as Grand-Maître's manuscript and inspiration in choreographing a ballet that celebrates the profoundly humanistic questions and testimonies expressed so poetically in Mitchell's compositions. The performance features three new songs from Mitchell's latest album, Shine, including a remix of Big Yellow Taxi, and selections from her earlier recordings such as: For the Roses, Passion Play, Slouching Towards Bethlehem, The Beat of Black Wings, Sex Kills, The Three Great Stimulants and The Fiddle and The Drum. As the Alberta Ballet's dancers give metaphorical life to the eternal music, Mitchell's most recent works of art are projected on a large screen on stage. These iconic images were choreographed by Mitchell to appear at pivotal moments in the ballet. The special was filmed at the Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary, Alberta and was also produced with the financial participation of the Alberta Film Development Program, The Canadian Television Fund and CAVCO.

Indiepix Sponsors Party and Panels at Evil City Film Festival |
|
|
|
 |
| |
October 9, 2007 - When asked by the lovely Ingrid Kopp of Shooting People to co-sponsor a Friday night party with the Evil City Film Festival, we jumped at the chance. We were not disappointed. Numerous filmmakers and film lovers came out to Friday night's "social" at the Bowery's Crash Mansion. Among those who got stellar goodie bags featuring the new Wholpin DVD magazine and light-up IndiePix pens were Brooklyn Independent's Joe Pacheco, documentarian Eric Philips-Horst, blogger Jennifer Warren, Darkon producer Thoma Kikis, and City Unplugged director Ilkka Jarvilaturi.
Two days later, IndiePix's Danielle DiGiacomo was in the house at the Lower East Side bar Fontana's, to moderate one lively panel about Film Bloggers and sit on another about Internet Distribution. The talks, perhaps fueled by pints of beer, were hilarious and productive. Sitting on the Film Blogging panel were some of the best in the biz: Stu VanAirsdale, editor of The Reeler; Karina Longworth of Spout; Pamela Cohn of Still in Motion and Renew Media; and the inimitable Michael Tully of Boredom at Its Boredest. The discussion covered everything from the new Eric Rohmer film to open letters to Sam Mendes. After a brief break in the bar it was on to a new topic, Internet Distribution, which was moderated by the wonderful Ingrid Kopp. Viral marketing heroes Arin Crumley and Susan Bruice (aka the Four-Eyed Monsters), IndiePix filmmaker and friend Leah Meyerhoff (Twitch on the Brooklyn Independent Compilation) and film director Jerry Rapp (Mojave Phone Booth). All in all, a side-splitting, engaging, mentally invigorating day! |

Film screening of Sanjay Kak's Jashn-e-Azadi |
|
|
|
 |
| |
September 25, 2007 - South Asia @ The New School presents a film screening of Sanjay Kak's Jashn-e-Azadi (How we celebrate freedom) A story of Kashmir, Tuesday, September 25, 2007, 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Lang Student Center, 55 W. 13th St, 2nd Floor.
It is August 15th, India's Independence day, and the Indian flag ritually goes up in the heart of Srinagar, Kashmir. But the empty streets and the sullen silence that greet India's claim on Kashmir spark off old questions about freedom - azadi - and the denial of freedom. In the aftermath of 18 years of an armed struggle, with 60,000 dead and nearly 7,000 missing, death and loss is everywhere. Sometimes it is marked; sometimes in the process of being uncovered, and sometimes expressed in the fractured minds of ordinary Kashmiris.
Using a mix of verite footage, rare archival material, poetry and text, the film is a provocative look at Indian democracy in the 60th year of India's independence, and a reflection on power, resistance and "freedom's terrible thirst".
Sanjay Kak is a self-taught, award-winning, independent documentary filmmaker whose recent work reflects his interests in ecology, alternatives and resistance politics. His films WORDS ON WATER, about the struggle against large dams in the Narmada valley in central India, and IN THE FOREST HANGS A BRIDGE, about the Adi tribe in Arunachal, north-east India, gathering to build a thousand foot bridge of cane and bamboo, have been widely screened both in India and abroad. |

September 4, 2007 - IndiePix buddy Matthew Lessner's short film, DARLING DARLING, starring Michael Cera of the hit comedy SUPERBAD, has been one of the top 5 selling short films on iTunes for the last few weeks. It's currently #3, duking it out with a bunch of Pixar films. It's the only indie film in the top 10! Much more blessings to Lessner. And check him out on our filmmaker interview pages!
"Michael Cera delivers as always, in a hilariously big way, but I believe there more to this film then meets the eye. Under close inspection the films absurdity and surreality has much to say about modern American suburbia, and absurdity of it's formalities, especially in a time of such global and domestic turmoil. I sense a
great deal of social subversion in this film, as well as a finely tuned, unique sense of deadpan humor" - iTunes

The two filmmakers have been variously called "the greatest surviving luminaries of the heroic age of the auteur", "the giants of art cinema" and "the towering giants of world cinema" by the media. While they shared a chronological commonality in death passing away on the same day, their philosophical approach to filmmaking had little in common. While Bergman was a moralist, Antonioni was Marxist in his approach. Antonioni's films reflect his approach in their spare plots and dialogue, in harsh ridicule of the rich and wealthy and an impatience for the spiritual aspects of human existence. Bergamn's work on the other hand dealt with questions of death, impermanence and faith. However, they both share the center-stage today in their death as they did in their life by making seminal contributions to European and world cinema and by serving as inspiration to generations of filmmakers.
As a tribute to these luminaries of cinema, our curators have hand-picked works of Bergman and Antonioni and created a "Bergman & Antonioni" Collection specially for the IndiePix community. Apart from having most important works of these filmmakers we have also included films like SUN RA - SPACE IS THE PLACE that "blends 1950s sci-fi, '70s Blaxploitation, and Ingmar Bergman's THE SEVENTH SEAL an intense, provocative mix; LIGHT KEEPS ME COMPANY which is a documentary on Sven Nykvist who shot most of Ingmar Bergman's films and THE TASTE OF TEA with a psychedelic twist on Ingmar Bergman's Fanny & Alexander. We hope you enjoy this collection as much as we did creating it. |

Indiepix and Canada Team Up |

July 24, 2007 - IndiePix teams up with the National Film Board of Canada to bring you a group of amazing and hard-to-find social issue mockumentaries and old-school vintage after-school specials. Just you wait and see - these are going to be brilliant. A lot of these films are going to be quite short - ranging from 5 minutes to an hour in length, but they'll be worth the wait. Among them will be one of Keanu Reeves' earliest performances caught on film, as well as Peter Watkins' LA COMMUNE - a 345 minute epic spanning 3 discs that tells the story of the French proletarian group established by rebellious Parisian citizens as they battle against The National Assembly in 1871 (if that wasn't a mouthful, I don't know what is!). We are so excited to be able to bring you these little-known gems and thank the National Film Board of Canada for helping make this possible. Stay tuned for upcoming release dates. |

Desert Bayou Gets Theatrical Release |

June 14, 2007 - Alex LeMay's film, DESERT BAYOU, will be released theatrically on August 24. DESERT BAYOU screened at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in 2006 and was included in the collection of films released by IndiePix and Full Frame for the library market as THE KATRINA EXPERIENCE. A trailer for the film is on-line at YouTube at this address.
This film examines whether two cultures can come together in a time of utter chaos, or whether their differences prove too great a challenge to overcome. In their own words evacuees of Hurricane Katrina, tell how they survived the storm of the century and out of the rubble ended up at a military installation in the deserts of Utah. With interviews from evacuees, political, military and religious leaders, community and social figures, the questions of race, politics and religion hurdle towards each other in this truly American story. See the review and trailer on the IndiePix website.
In anticipation of its release in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Salt Lake Tribune stirred up some controversy with its article under the headline: "Katrina documentary praises Utahns for helping hand, harshly criticizes officials." A copy of which is available online here. Alex welcomes the attention for the film, quoting the line from the publicity department -- Just spell our names right!
IndiePix is very pleased to have been involved with this project since its first screening and contributed financially to its post-festival edit. Alex was very helpful in pulling the collection together for THE KATRINA EXPERIENCE and has been a strong supporter of its library release. Alex comments that the New York City screening, coinciding with the second anniversary of the Katrina event, will be marked by additional publicity and public relations events. We're looking forward to that!
