IndiePix Films launches new Nonfiction Awards

January 10, 2008 - Excerpts of the Indiewire press release A new nonfiction filmmaking award, recognizing the wide breadth of the genre and also specific crafts such as cinematography and editing is being created from within the documentary community. The inaugural event, honoring films from 2007, will be held on March 18, 2008 at the IFC Center in New York City. The awards are to be co-chaired by filmmaker AJ Schnack (director of KURT COBAIN ABOUT A SON?) and Thom Powers, Documentary Programmer of the Toronto International Film Festival. Nominees in 8 categories will be announced on January 20, 2008 at an event for press and the documentary community in Park City, UT (coinciding with the Sundance Film Festival). On that date further details will be revealed about the award, including its official name. Fifteen films have been shortlisted in the category of Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Filmmaking by a blue-ribbon nominating committee of 12 programmers from North America's top film festivals who are esteemed for their specialization in documentary. Those films are: "Billy the Kid" "Deep Water" "The Devil Came on Horseback" "Ghosts of Cite Soleil" "In the Shadow of the Moon" "Into Great Silence" "Lake of Fire" "Manda Bala (Send a Bullet)" "Manufactured Landscapes" "The Monastery - Mr. Vig and the Nun" "No End in Sight" "Sicko" "Taxi to the Dark Side" "The Unforeseen" "Zoo" The idea for the awards was born out of vigorous debate in the documentary community chronicled by Mr. Schnack on his popular nonfiction film blog All these wonderful things. His call for recognizing documentaries based on filmmaking craft and creativity engendered a groundswell of support that resulted in a coalition, including the participation of IndiePix, to support the venture. Mr. Schnack said, "Many of us feel that there is often a gap between the films that have impacted the year in nonfiction filmmaking and those films recognized at year's end. This was particularly true in this past year, which saw such strong advancement in filmmaking craft. We believe that the time is right to acknowledge the vision and innovation of the filmmakers and craftspersons within the broad field of nonfiction, no matter the subject." As the award co-chair, Mr. Schnack has withheld his 2007 film 'Kurt Cobain About a Son' from award consideration to avoid any conflict of interest. Bob Alexander, President of IndiePix, said that: "Over the last year, we have had the opportunity to work with a number of nonfiction filmmakers whose dedication to the art and craft of their films is unparalleled. We are very pleased to be able to contribute to the organization of these awards, to support the concept of superior craft in nonfiction filmmaking, and to bring our full suite of internet technologies to support this event." Mr. Alexander said that Danielle DiGiacomo, the coordinator for Documentary Films at IndiePix, will be the point person for the Company's involvement. Schnack added, "IndiePix, as a forward-thinking company that has proven dedicated to celebrating the best in independent film, is the perfect partner for this project." The nominating committee will select nominees in 8 categories (see the list below) from a list of 76 eligible films. The winners will be chosen by a larger voting pool selected from within the documentary community of top filmmakers, distributors, programmers and writers. Voting will take place beginning in February 2008. Voting will be conducted by secure internet transactions on the IndiePix website. Mr. Powers said, "In choosing voters, we are putting a premium on who watches the most documentaries. Rather than look to outside groups for validation, this is an honor from within the community." Award Categories: Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Filmmaking Outstanding Achievement in an International Feature Outstanding Achievement in a Debut Feature Outstanding Achievement in Direction Outstanding Achievement in Producing Outstanding Achievement in Editing Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography Outstanding Achievement in Graphics and Animation Members of the Nominating Committee: Thom Powers (Chair), Documentary Programmer, Toronto International Film Festival Phoebe Brush, Director of Programming, Full Frame Film Festival Matt Dentler, Producer, South by Southwest Film Festival Sean Farnel, Director of Programming, Hot Docs Tom Hall, Director of Programming, Sarasota Film Festival David Kwok, Director of Programming, Tribeca Film Festival Cara Mertes, Director of Sundance Documentary Film Program, Sundance Film Festival David Nugent, Director of Programming, Hamptons International Film Festival Rachel Rosen, Director of Programming, Los Angeles Film Festival Sky Sitney, Director of Programming, SilverDocs David Wilson, Director, True/False Film Festival Brit Withey, Artistic Director of Festivals, Starz Denver Film Festival

news-Indiepix acquires fantastic HD feature

January 7, 2008 - Inexplicable disorder. Televisions off-air. Humans ravaging each other for scraps of food and weapons. This is the turn that life takes for three friends trying to find their place in post-9-11 America. Elegantly shot in crisp HD, this dark, eerie portrait of societal meltdown questions the loyalties of friendship and challenges all illusions of safety and order. IndiePix is thrilled to welcome John W. Yost into the fold, and provide the highest quality DVD and download-to-own distribution for Every Good Thing to Rust. The IndiePix release of the film will also include trailers, a commentary track with the director and lead actor, production stills, and more. After production of Every Good Thing to Rust, Filmmaker John W. Yost chose to forgo the festival circuit and offer the entire film as a download, so that any fan of independent film would have access. Check out his website, www.everygoodthingtorust.com, for his fantastic blog about the decision. As well as giving away his movie to any with a computer, Mr. Yost has found a way for his film to make a larger, positive difference in the community. During the month of December John teamed up with several diverse venues in upstate New York to screen the film and raise money for the Homeless and Traveler's Aid Society of the Capital District. The four screenings were very successful, raising some much needed and very appreciated funds. HATAS works with the community's impoverished, helpless, and homeless by offering more than just a handout, but by helping them lead normal lives, one step at a time. Opening Night Film at Woodstock Fest 2007

October 11, 2007 - "The Fiddle and the Drum" was a meditative dance piece choreographed to Joni Mitchell. Joni and internationally acclaimed choreographer Jean Grand-Matre of the Alberta Ballet Company collaborated to create The Fiddle and The Drum, an engaging performance spectacle combining three art forms; music, dance and art; which Joni calls "the best project of my career." Produced by Joe Media Group of Calgary in association with Bravo!, The Fiddle and The Drum, which premieres October 22 at 8pm ET / 5pm PT, showcases Mitchell's life-long concerns regarding environmental neglect and the warring nature of mankind. Mitchell's provocative music served as Grand-Matre's manuscript and inspiration in choreographing a ballet that celebrates the profoundly humanistic questions and testimonies expressed so poetically in Mitchell's compositions. The performance features three new songs from Mitchell's latest album, Shine, including a remix of Big Yellow Taxi, and selections from her earlier recordings such as: For the Roses, Passion Play, Slouching Towards Bethlehem, The Beat of Black Wings, Sex Kills, The Three Great Stimulants and The Fiddle and The Drum. As the Alberta Ballet's dancers give metaphorical life to the eternal music, Mitchell's most recent works of art are projected on a large screen on stage. These iconic images were choreographed by Mitchell to appear at pivotal moments in the ballet. The special was filmed at the Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary, Alberta and was also produced with the financial participation of the Alberta Film Development Program, The Canadian Television Fund and CAVCO. Indiepix Sponsors Party and Panels at Evil City Film Festival

October 9, 2007 - When asked by the lovely Ingrid Kopp of Shooting People to co-sponsor a Friday night party with the Evil City Film Festival, we jumped at the chance. We were not disappointed. Numerous filmmakers and film lovers came out to Friday night's "social" at the Bowery's Crash Mansion. Among those who got stellar goodie bags featuring the new Wholpin DVD magazine and light-up IndiePix pens were Brooklyn Independent's Joe Pacheco, documentarian Eric Philips-Horst, blogger Jennifer Warren, Darkon producer Thoma Kikis, and City Unplugged director Ilkka Jarvilaturi. Two days later, IndiePix's Danielle DiGiacomo was in the house at the Lower East Side bar Fontana's, to moderate one lively panel about Film Bloggers and sit on another about Internet Distribution. The talks, perhaps fueled by pints of beer, were hilarious and productive. Sitting on the Film Blogging panel were some of the best in the biz: Stu VanAirsdale, editor of The Reeler; Karina Longworth of Spout; Pamela Cohn of Still in Motion and Renew Media; and the inimitable Michael Tully of Boredom at Its Boredest. The discussion covered everything from the new Eric Rohmer film to open letters to Sam Mendes. After a brief break in the bar it was on to a new topic, Internet Distribution, which was moderated by the wonderful Ingrid Kopp. Viral marketing heroes Arin Crumley and Susan Bruice (aka the Four-Eyed Monsters), IndiePix filmmaker and friend Leah Meyerhoff (Twitch on the Brooklyn Independent Compilation) and film director Jerry Rapp (Mojave Phone Booth). All in all, a side-splitting, engaging, mentally invigorating day!

Film screening of Sanjay Kak's Jashn-e-Azadi

September 25, 2007 - South Asia @ The New School presents a film screening of Sanjay Kak's Jashn-e-Azadi (How we celebrate freedom) A story of Kashmir, Tuesday, September 25, 2007, 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Lang Student Center, 55 W. 13th St, 2nd Floor. It is August 15th, India's Independence day, and the Indian flag ritually goes up in the heart of Srinagar, Kashmir. But the empty streets and the sullen silence that greet India's claim on Kashmir spark off old questions about freedom - azadi - and the denial of freedom. In the aftermath of 18 years of an armed struggle, with 60,000 dead and nearly 7,000 missing, death and loss is everywhere. Sometimes it is marked; sometimes in the process of being uncovered, and sometimes expressed in the fractured minds of ordinary Kashmiris. Using a mix of verite footage, rare archival material, poetry and text, the film is a provocative look at Indian democracy in the 60th year of India's independence, and a reflection on power, resistance and "freedom's terrible thirst". Sanjay Kak is a self-taught, award-winning, independent documentary filmmaker whose recent work reflects his interests in ecology, alternatives and resistance politics. His films WORDS ON WATER, about the struggle against large dams in the Narmada valley in central India, and IN THE FOREST HANGS A BRIDGE, about the Adi tribe in Arunachal, north-east India, gathering to build a thousand foot bridge of cane and bamboo, have been widely screened both in India and abroad.

A World of Limitless Possibilities, Awaiting Discovery

September 11, 2007 - Next week, on Monday 17th September IndiePix and a U.K based network management technology company NetworkedPlanet jointly launch a new facility that will provide intelligent, interactive access to the world of Independent films - 'Discovery'. The launch will be held at at the British Film Institute, London. IndiePix will announce and demonstrate a unique, new, state-of-the-art interactive service to provide intelligent pathways through the large and growing world of independent film for indie film community. For the first time, film lovers will explore thousands of the world's best films from independent filmmakers, discover a film of interest to them, and order or even download their choice. At the launch, IndiePix's President, Bob Alexander, will outline how the economics of independent film production and the explosion of independent film festivals lead to a vast expansion of extraordinary titles available to consumers. Addressing the growing world of independent film, he will demonstrate how film lovers can explore, discover and order or download the title of their selection from thousands of the world's best independent films. The demonstration is based on a catalog of over 3,000 curated independent films from around the world, many of which are otherwise unavailable to the film fan. This catalog is planned to grow to 10,000 over the next 18 months. Bob Alexander will be joined at the briefing by Kal Ahmed, Founder of NetworkedPlanet, who will explain how the website uses a revolutionary intelligent navigation system which allows IndiePixx's in-house team of film experts to insert all sorts of information - such as the theme of the film, its focus on key topics, its filmmaking style - based on their expert evaluation. The system will then create relevant links, so that when someone is browsing any one film online, it will suggest other links based on relevance and similarities. 'Discovery' will be immediately available for the IndiePix community to explore so watch out for the announcement next week!

Darling Darling on TOP

September 4, 2007 - IndiePix buddy Matthew Lessner's short film, DARLING DARLING, starring Michael Cera of the hit comedy SUPERBAD, has been one of the top 5 selling short films on iTunes for the last few weeks. It's currently #3, duking it out with a bunch of Pixar films. It's the only indie film in the top 10! Much more blessings to Lessner. And check him out on our filmmaker interview pages! "Michael Cera delivers as always, in a hilariously big way, but I believe there more to this film then meets the eye. Under close inspection the films absurdity and surreality has much to say about modern American suburbia, and absurdity of it's formalities, especially in a time of such global and domestic turmoil. I sense a great deal of social subversion in this film, as well as a finely tuned, unique sense of deadpan humor" - iTunes

A Tribute to Auteurs of World Cinema

August 29, 2007 - Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman (July 14, 1918 - July 30, 2007) and Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni (September 29, 1912 - July 30, 2007) passed away July 30, 2007.. The two filmmakers have been variously called "the greatest surviving luminaries of the heroic age of the auteur", "the giants of art cinema" and "the towering giants of world cinema" by the media. While they shared a chronological commonality in death passing away on the same day, their philosophical approach to filmmaking had little in common. While Bergman was a moralist, Antonioni was Marxist in his approach. Antonioni's films reflect his approach in their spare plots and dialogue, in harsh ridicule of the rich and wealthy and an impatience for the spiritual aspects of human existence. Bergamn's work on the other hand dealt with questions of death, impermanence and faith. However, they both share the center-stage today in their death as they did in their life by making seminal contributions to European and world cinema and by serving as inspiration to generations of filmmakers. As a tribute to these luminaries of cinema, our curators have hand-picked works of Bergman and Antonioni and created a "Bergman & Antonioni" Collection specially for the IndiePix community. Apart from having most important works of these filmmakers we have also included films like SUN RA - SPACE IS THE PLACE that "blends 1950s sci-fi, '70s Blaxploitation, and Ingmar Bergman's THE SEVENTH SEAL an intense, provocative mix; LIGHT KEEPS ME COMPANY which is a documentary on Sven Nykvist who shot most of Ingmar Bergman's films and THE TASTE OF TEA with a psychedelic twist on Ingmar Bergman's Fanny & Alexander. We hope you enjoy this collection as much as we did creating it.

Indiepix and Canada Team Up

July 24, 2007 - IndiePix teams up with the National Film Board of Canada to bring you a group of amazing and hard-to-find social issue mockumentaries and old-school vintage after-school specials. Just you wait and see - these are going to be brilliant. A lot of these films are going to be quite short - ranging from 5 minutes to an hour in length, but they'll be worth the wait. Among them will be one of Keanu Reeves' earliest performances caught on film, as well as Peter Watkins' LA COMMUNE - a 345 minute epic spanning 3 discs that tells the story of the French proletarian group established by rebellious Parisian citizens as they battle against The National Assembly in 1871 (if that wasn't a mouthful, I don't know what is!). We are so excited to be able to bring you these little-known gems and thank the National Film Board of Canada for helping make this possible. Stay tuned for upcoming release dates.

Jack Spade Compilation

After a year-long contractual hold-up, IndiePix is proud to announce that our Jack Spade compilation DVD will finally see the light of day for a tentative X-mas holiday release.

Release slate Summer 2007

July 2, 2007 - July will see the re-release of the BROOKLYN INDEPENDENT short film compilation DVD, curated by the program's director, Joe Pacheco. The disc includes a remastered version of charming works by Ray Tintori ("Jettison Your Loved Ones"), Benh Zeitlin ("Egg") and Lance Edmond's "Vacationland", which stars the promising new talent Luke Schurman. Lila Yomtoob's HIGH LIFE, a Friends-like homage to young artists in love in Brooklyn, David Dixon's UNLOOSENED AND ROOT, and Ricardo Lobo's double release, SISTERS OF LADAKH and WOMEN OF THE SAND, will round out the month. August will end with a bang, as Michael Tully and Damian Lahey's long-awaited COCAINE ANGEL makes its auspicious debut here, and the lovely short documentary HENRY MILLER ASLEEP AND AWAKE, originally shot in 1979 and starring the eponymous author, sees its first ever release on DVD. Only at IndiePixFilms.com.

Desert Bayou Gets Theatrical Release

June 14, 2007 - Alex LeMay's film, DESERT BAYOU, will be released theatrically on August 24. DESERT BAYOU screened at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in 2006 and was included in the collection of films released by IndiePix and Full Frame for the library market as THE KATRINA EXPERIENCE. A trailer for the film is on-line at YouTube at this address. This film examines whether two cultures can come together in a time of utter chaos, or whether their differences prove too great a challenge to overcome. In their own words evacuees of Hurricane Katrina, tell how they survived the storm of the century and out of the rubble ended up at a military installation in the deserts of Utah. With interviews from evacuees, political, military and religious leaders, community and social figures, the questions of race, politics and religion hurdle towards each other in this truly American story. See the review and trailer on the IndiePix website. In anticipation of its release in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Salt Lake Tribune stirred up some controversy with its article under the headline: "Katrina documentary praises Utahns for helping hand, harshly criticizes officials." A copy of which is available online here. Alex welcomes the attention for the film, quoting the line from the publicity department -- Just spell our names right! IndiePix is very pleased to have been involved with this project since its first screening and contributed financially to its post-festival edit. Alex was very helpful in pulling the collection together for THE KATRINA EXPERIENCE and has been a strong supporter of its library release. Alex comments that the New York City screening, coinciding with the second anniversary of the Katrina event, will be marked by additional publicity and public relations events. We're looking forward to that!

IN THE NEWS - COCAINE ANGEL MAKES WEST COAST PREMIERE IN L.A.

May 31, 2007 - On Tuesday, May 29th, the Mike Tully/Damian K. Lahey feature COCAINE ANGEL, made its West Coast premiere at the Laemmle Sunset 5 Cinema, just across from the legendary Chateau Marmont in West Hollwood. The film, which garnered a 3-star review from THE NEW YORK POST and earned director Tully a space in FILMMAKER MAGAZINE'S "New Faces of Independent Cinema," played incredibly well to the L.A. crowd, who stayed for an extensive and spirited Q & A with writer-star Lahey (himself lauded by Variety as giving a "pitch perfect performance.") Lahey also pulled up Indiepix's Danielle DiGiacomo, who acquired the title for our distribution, to the front of the cinema, and they both talked about ways in which Indiepix would maximize innovative distribution opportunities for this excellent film. Afterward, the crowd all filed to Sushi Dan's next door, where fine food and cocktails were offered to the local filmmakers, actors, and press (including a representative from NPR) who conversed well into the night.

Pennebaker (DON'T LOOK BACK), Michael Moore (FAHREINHEIT 9/11) and Charles Burnett (KILLER OF SHEEP). IndiePix kept busy interviewing as many fantastic filmmakers as we could find, among them the prolific Paola Mendoza (who directed STILL STANDING, part of the Katrina Experience Collection and produced WITHOUT A KING, a highlight of this year's festival), Gary Hustwit (director of the font-astic documentary HELVETICA, which also played South by Southwest and moves on to Sundance, Annie Sundberg (brilliant filmmaker behind last year's THE TRIALS OF DARRYL HUNT - which won Full Frame's Audience Award and was shortlisted for an Oscar) and this year's powerful THE DEVIL CAME ON HORSEBACK - which garnered the Working Films Award and the Seeds of War Award) and Julia Reichert (one of the "Ten", who won a special mention last year for her remarkable four-hour documentary about children with cancer, A LION IN THE HOUSE, and presented Michael Moore's ROGER AND ME this year). Synopsis: "I'm not black, I'm not white, not foreign...just different in the mind -- different in the brains, that's all..." explains 15-year-old Billy in Jennifer Venditti's provocative coming of age film. Billy's intuitive commentary and intimate verite footage reveal a unique attitude as he responds to a paniful childhood, first time love, and his experience as an outsider in small town Maine. By turns humorous and disturbing, this portrait challenges the viewer to look beyond labels and contemplate the future of a teen still in the process of becoming.

Johnny Berlin a hit in Paris and Colorado!

March 5, 2007 - February 19th to the 26th brought Paris' unique Cinerail Festival, an international festival devoted to "train and retro on film." (Not as much as a niche category as one might think, considering one of the very first films ever was THE GREAT AMERICAN TRAIN ROBBERY!). DeJoseph had the opportunity to travel to Paris and see a packed house of French filmlovers respond enthusiastically to his fine documentary! He blogs about it on our blog, check it out at http://weblog.indiepix.net/2007/03/01/johnny-berlin-hits-paris/. Meanwhile, back in Durango, Colorado, a breathtaking town high in the mountains, JOHNNY BERLIN played to a sold-out house, attracting so much attention and Kudos that the community radio station, KDUR, decided to dedicate a portion of their program REELS TO RADIO to the film! As Program Director Bryant Liggett wrote to our director friend: "Your movie rules.....watched it in Durango yesterday. Best thing I've seen in a long time." Congratulations Dominic! And Johnny, of course!

With a dry wit and self-effacing humor, as well as an endearing eccentricity, Jon Hyrns gives voice to his life and dreams in Dominic J. DeJoseph's hour-long documentary, narrating a journey that traverses much of the West Coast by 1930's Pullman car. The camera is silent witness to a monologue delivered by 40-something Hyrns, whose job&hellip…

Indiepix Interviews Filmmakers at South by Southwest

February 26, 2007 - The Indiepix team is looking forward to our third year in a row at Austin's South by Southwest Film Festival, where we will again have a booth set up in the Convention Center. This year, however, we bring more than just CD-Roms and light-up pens! For 2007, we have an entire production crew and set ready to film a series of interviews with the creme de la creme of the independent film scene -- film directors, festival programmers, laywers, sales reps! On our Charlie Rose-like set, we plan on having a series of dynamic interviewers (among them the lovely and talented Agnes Varnum of First Run/Icarus Features and http://www.agnesvarnum.com/) ask some incisive questions. We will then edit these into 2-minute clips, and post them on our website at www.indiepixfilms.com. South by Southwest Film Festival, Agnes, and everyone interviewed is invited to post the clips as well, so some amazing cross-blogging promotion can take place. Among those lined up for interviews are: DANCE PARTY U.S.A. director Aaron Katz (who will attend the festival for the second year in a row with his new film, QUIET CITY), Gen Art Festival director Jeffrey Abramson, documentarian extraordinare Ashley Sabin (MARDI GRAS: MADE IN CHINA and KAMP KATRINA), Woodstock Film Festival founder Laurent Rejto, and Canadian filmmaker Ron Mann (whose last South by Southwest movie, TALES OF THE RAT FINK, played to a sold out theatre and had graphics adorning the festival's official tote bags). Stay tuned for more updates from Hollywood of the South!

Paola Mendoza's New Film

February 20, 2007 - Unlike most of her contemporaries, Paola Mendoza is not content with just her lovely visage on the big screen. Starring in films like 2004's ON THE OUTS and the Sundance winner PADRE NUESTRO (which won the coveted Jury Prize for Best Dramatic Feature last month), Paola has carefully woven a tapestry of documentary works - last year's AUTUMN EYES and STILL STANDING (part of the KATRINA EXPERIENCE, available only at Indiepixfilms.com) - that define a new kind of performer in the digitial age: one that controls her stake in the medium by shaping it. Like Sarah Polley's debut feature AWAY FROM HER, AUTUMN'S EYES is a mature first work by an actress who's acting chops come close to a rigorous eye behind the camera. Paola has not just one but four films in post-production, placing her alongside the likes of Cara Seymour, Lori Petty, Kevin Corrigan, Melissa Leo and Alan Ruck.

Amir Bar-Lev's new film

February 9, 2007 - Indiepix is proud to announce that documentary filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev, whose film NEW ORLEANS FURLOUGH was featured as part of our KATRINA EXPERIENCE documentary collection, has scored yet again with his feature film MY KID COULD PAINT THAT. The film, which chronicles the controversy surrounding the rise of 4-year-old Maria Olmstead to fame and fortune in the modern art world, was a blazing success at Sundance - picked up by A & E Indie Films and then purchased by Sony Pictures Classics for a cool two million! Once again, here is proof that we here at Indiepix support and cultivate the best up-and-coming filmmakers on the scene!

Jack Spade short films

January 29, 2007 - Jack Spade grew out of Andy Spade's realization that handbags could be both utilitarian and stylish - not just for women but also for men. Starting out by selling utility bags to hardware stores back in 1997 with his eponymous wife Kate, Mr. Spade collaborated with an LA art student (Jack?) to create a fine niche of classics in the heart of downtown. The store itself, a wonderful collection of masculin-feminin bric-a-bracs, which includes the random one-off dvd (a recent collaboration with Palm Pictures resulted in the Mike Mills directed PAPER BOYS), will soon make room for a cross-curated collection of short films hand-picked by Jack Spade's Matt Singer and Indiepix's Jordan Mattos! Expected release date March 2007.

January 15, 2007 - Danielle DiGiacomo, Documentary Acquisitions Director and Jordan Mattos, Manager of Narrative Acquisitions for Indiepix, head off to Sundance on Tuesday, January 16th to schmooze with the biggest, best, and meanest in the film industry! Though we've heard it's cold, we've bought long johns, stocked up on business cards, and are headed out to see as many great films as possible (and of course, pick them up for Indiepix). Friends we expect to see a lot of are Gen Art's Jeff Abramson; the inimitable Indiewire trio -- Eugene, Brian, and Jimmy Israel; lawyer extraordinare Steven Beer; Woodstock Film Festival's lovely Meira Blaustein; filmmaker Daniel Mulloy; The Reeler's Stu Van Airsdale; A & E Indie's Ryan Harrington; and countless others. We will be resting our heads (for probably only two hours a night, given all the nonstop action!) in a condo at the Raquet Club, where most of the press screeners are held. Rooming with us will be a team of energetic London lads who are starting their own online outfit and film festival, as well as director Tze Chun and his crew. Tze, a friend of ours, has a short film, WINDOWBREAKER, in the festival! We'll be interested to see all the honchos fighting over his attention! Stay tuned to the Indiepix blog for periodic updates of the Park City action!

December 25, 2006 - A customer asks (in a frustrated way): "Quick question: Do your movies got some DRM? Bob Alexander responds: Thanks for that question--and the quick answer is NO! But while we're at it, let's talk about this a minute. In our view: DRM=Copy Prevention=Using Technology to Control Behavior That equation is why we think "DRM" as it is understood today is a Very Bad Thing. What we implement is a watermarking system that identifies the content you purchase as yours. You can carrying your copy around to play on someone else's DVD player and you can make a backup for your archives. But if you make a thousand copies and put them up for sale or make them otherwise available, they'll still be marked as yours. That would be bad! Our filmmakers specifically endorse this approach to the idea of "fair use" in our agreements -- and our idea of fair use implements the concept outlined above. You as a consumer have the right to the fair use of the product you bought and own, and the filmmaker has the right to payback all the loans he took out to make his film in the first place and to make a living besides. Our system balances those various demands. And our business model is part of it. More than half of the retail price of the film you buy goes to the filmmaker. In buying a filmmaker's film from us, you are directly supporting the filmmaker -- and you also have your rights as a buyer/owner of the product. Have you ever tried Paul Newman popcorn? It's pretty much popcorn -- it's ok but what can you say about popcorn? But people buy Paul Newman's popcorn because they know that all the profits from Newman's company go to specific charities. And they get to enjoy the popcorn. That's the IndiePix idea of how you ought to be able to enjoy a film from us using our Download-to-Own process. Try it--you'll like It! Bob Alexander

December 1, 2006 - Alex Le May's film, Desert Bayou, focuses on the travails of several hundred New Orleans families that were airlifted to Utah after the storm. The first they knew of it was when the Jet Blue pilot on one of the airlift planes said, "the weather in Salt Lake City is ..." What a story! The film played earlier this week (November 27, 2006) at the Cornell Cinema Post Katrina film series entitled "Hell or High Water". Alex was included in this series along with Spike Lee's film and a couple of short films and the overall program attracted a great deal of attention on campus. Alex played a key role in bringing the entire Katrina Project together. He was one of the first filmmakers to agree to put his film in this unique, Library-only, distribution program, and his leadership helped bring several others along as well. Thank you, Alex! And congratulations on the continuing recognition your film is receiving. We expected no less.
