Martin is on his way up the coast for a quiet weekend. Out of nowhere an attractive teenage girl appears on the side of the road. He drives past. He is desperate to avoid situations that might trigger the demons he is trying to suppress. But when he stops at a scenic spot up the road, she knocks on his window and asks him for a ride. His decision to drive her home turns into a nightmare when she coerces him inside.
DIRECTOR'S NOTES
I intend this film to challenge audiences – the story is tense from the get go, the meeting of the characters is fraught with emotional strain, but Martin and Renee, while not always sympathetic, have charm. They are both on a ‘journey’ and their meeting throws up all sorts of questions, the central one being, what would you do if you were in Martin’s shoes? The situation that develops between him and Renee is his worst nightmare. If he does the wrong thing he will end up back in prison. Reality shifts as Martin and Renee have a halting heart to heart, never actually revealing the truth to each other, but telling the audience plenty. The sympathy is with both characters as the drama plays out, but the story is Martin’s as Renee reveals her sad side and Martin turns from dark to light.
