That year, there were 44 reported murders of transgender persons worldwide and the United States Congress was beginning to debate national hate crimes legislation. With this as the backdrop, a conservative, small-town jury was about to hear what had never been successfully done in a United States courtroom – prosecuting the murder of a transgender person as a hate crime. Photos of Angie provides a compelling look at the complexities of sexual identity across the globe through the eyes of a small-town girl whose life was cut short.

Told in five movements, one per day of the trial, the program looks at Angie’s journey of self-discovery, transgender lives in various cultural contexts, hate crime legislation, and the mysterious nature of her killer. Photos of Angie not only explores the transphobia of the killer and the culture that supports it, but also gives a voice to her suffering family, those that acted on her behalf, and ultimately, Angie herself.
