The Republican grip on the country tightened in 2004 with the reelection of President George W. Bush. His native Texas is often viewed with bemusement by outsiders, especially some of the garrulous politicians who manage to make inroads into the national psyche. Filmmaker Paul Stekler decided to track down some of these effusive characters, and he produces the engrossing results in LAST MAN STANDING POLITICS, TEXAS STYLE. Concentrating on two battles for power, Stekler initially focuses his camera on the battle to be state representative, which is played out between Republican Rick Green and Democrat Patrick Rose. The two couldn't be more different, and regularly butt heads over every issue under the sun. Stekler then proceeds to study the race for governorship, which proves to be a hotly contested issue between both sides. Also taking in the political history of the state, the filmmaker attempts to reason why it has shifted so far to the right when it used to be a left wing stranglehold. A number of prime political figures in the state impart their knowledge in amongst the real life battles, making this a captivating treat for viewers interested in local politics.
