Four years in the making, this televsion miniseries follows the burgeoning love affair between Hari Kumar, an Indian journalist raised in England, and Daphne Manners, an Englishwoman living in India. Their relationship develops under the jealous eyes of local police chief Ronald Merrick, who struggles to conceal his darkest secret from everyone, even himself. When the lovers are attacked in the gardens of the ruined Bibighar palace and Daphne is raped, Merrick seizes his opportunity and has the young Hari jailed. But this is only the beginning... Spanning five years, the cast expands to include a multitude of characters whose lives intersect in complex and unexpected ways.
