In this personal documentary, director Thomas Allen Harris travels to Africa and Brazil on a quest to find his spiritual ancestors. Reared in both the Bronx and Tanzania, Harris formed many questions about notions of race and religion (particularly under the influence of his reverent Christian grandparents). As in many first-person documentaries, Harris strives to uncover some truth about his life and heritage. By exploring religious rites in African and Brazilian Pagan and Christian communities, Harris begins to reconcile the influences in his life. The effective use of silent Super-8 footage (with narration) and a sorrowful score by Vernon Reid enhance this journey of self-discovery.
