Embedded/Live
(DVD)
DIRECTED BY - Tim Robbins
The antiwar movement that surrounded the American invasion of Iraq in the early part of the 21st century was considerably buoyed by contributions from actor Tim Robbins and his wife Susan Sarandon. Although the couple suffered a deluge of invective from right-leaning journalists for their stance, Robbins persevered and produced a remarkable play named EMBEDDEDED as a direct response to the taunts he suffered. The play offered a thinly-veiled satire of the Iraq war, with troops invading the fictional country of "Gomorrah" in an attempt to free its citizens from the Butcher of Babylon, who happens to preside over some vast oil fields. A phalanx of journalists and photographers are also along for the ride, with Robbins making it clear that they and the soldiers are simple tools who are being manipulated be a higher power. A biting satire, EMBEDDED was shot live for this release, with Robbins neatly tugging at the emotions throughout as he leads the play through some funny, shocking, and poignant material.
