Part of a series in which a German television station asked a number of directors to envision what they thought might happen on December 31, 1999, Miguel Albaladejo's film is a celebration of life in and around Madrid, Spain. The film is ostensibly about the efforts of a poor couple, the pregnant Paloma and her husband Miguel, to get from their small town on the outskirts of Madrid to Paloma's parents' house for New Year's Eve. However, the film uses this as a setup for a chance to have Paloma and Miguel interact with and observe a number of eccentric and colorful characters. As entertaining and absorbing as the characters who populate it, THE FIRST NIGHT OF MY LIFE is an offbeat pleasure.
