What is Download-to-Own?

"Download-to-Own" is a new concept in DVD delivery and ownership designed to address three major concerns for film distribution in the digital age: How can we harness the power of the internet to deliver our films to the ever-growing independent film audience at a lower cost to the customer without sacrificing the high-quality image of the original film?

There's no shortage of places to download films on the internet; but most of them mean that you have to settle for a low-resolution version of the film and you get none of the special features that you would expect from a store-bought DVD. There's no director's commentary extra scenes, just the feature. That's where Download-to-Own comes in.

With Download-to-Own from IndiePix, you get the same high-quality DVD including all the bonus material, commentary, menus and chapter-selection that you would find on any DVD. Plus, there's no more waiting for your DVD to arrive in the mail! Download-to-Own let's you skip the wait and burn your own copy of the DVD at home, in just the time it takes to download!

Also, unlike other sites, IndiePix downloads are not streaming or progressive videos. "Download-to-Own" means that once you download and burn your disc, you get to keep your DVD and watch it as often as you like! Plus, the DVD you burn is not region-specific and will play in just about any DVD player or computer.

How does it work?

In order to download and burn your DVD, you will first be asked to download the DiscFactory software. Disc Factory will manage your download and burn your DVD for you and takes up very little space (4 KB) on your hard drive. Once your download has begun, Disc Factory takes care of the rest! The software will quietly run in the background, leaving you free to continue using other applications while you wait.

Disc Factory currently runs natively on Mac and PC. A Linux version is planned but is not yet ready for release.

What do I need to download a film?

In order to download one of our films, your computer must meet the following requirements:

  1. Windows XP/Vista or Mac 10.4 or greater
  2. Sufficient space on your hard drive to download the DVD files.
    • (Space requirements vary by film. Maximum requirement is approx. 4 GB. Once you successfully burn your DVD, the downloaded files will automatically erase themselves from the hard drive.)
  3. A DVD burner
    • In order to complete your download, you must have a device capable of burning DVDs (not just CDs). Your DVD burner may be internal or an external device but it must be connected to your computer before the download begins.
  4. A blank DVD-R to burn your DVD when the download is complete.

How long does it take to download a film?

Download-to-Own means that you are downloading a full DVD. For a feature film, the files may be quite large (up tp 4 GB) and may take some time. Short films often are smaller files and take less time. Download times vary depending on the length of the film and the speed of your internet connection. As your download progresses, Disc Factory will give you updated estimates on how much time has elapsed, how much time remains as well as the speed of your connection. But since Disc Factory runs in the background, you are free to continue using your computer while Disc Factory is running.

What happens to the files after I complete my download?

Once your download is complete and you have successfully burned your DVD, Disc Factory will automatically erase the downloaded files, freeing up any space it used on your hard drive.

Can I have Disc Factory download to an external hard drive?

The current version of Disc Factory is only allowed to download files directly to your internal hard drive. There are plans to include this feature in future versions of Disc Factory so check back for updates!

What about Digital Rights Management (DRM)?

DVDs burned through Disc Factory do not contain any DRM restrictions or encryption. We understand that many customers like to copy their films to portable devices (iPods, PSPs, etc.) and make no attempt to prevent them from doing so. However, IndiePix does not approve of inapropriate copying of our filmmakers' work. All of our films available for download are watermarked with unique information to identify the disc as yours. Inappropriate copying that denies the filmmaker the opportunity to earn a living from his work can be quickly identified from this watermark.

What if my download is interrupted before it finishes?

If for any reason, Disc Factory is interrupted before your download is complete (e.g. if you lose your internet connection or close Disc Factory for any reason), restarting the program from your Start Menu (Windows) or Finder (Mac) will allow Disc Factory to pick up where it left off. Note: Disc Factory will not automatically restart after an interruption.
