Laurie Coker

Laurie Coker grew up in Jamerson and Sherman in north central Texas. Her father and mother were both musical and loved performing. Her mother accompanied her on piano while Laurie sang on local radio at the age of six. She studied voice and piano and performed at school, church and civic functions. She graduated from Sherman High School and continued her education at Austin College in Sherman, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art and a permanent Texas Teaching Certificate to teach art in the middle school and high school. She also studied drama at Austin College with Paul and Bonnie Beardsley. After graduation she lived in New York for five months where she worked for Wesley Advertising in Rockefeller Center, going to theater productions as often as she could.

Laurie lived in Hollywood, California for two years, studying film acting with Charles Conrad who had a studio in Burbank at the time. An actor, director and producer, Charles was an excellent teacher — a student of Sanford Meisner in New York. After the birth of her first child, her family moved to Austin where she periodically acted in theatre and television while bringing up three extraordinary children and working in public health for 24 years. After retiring from the Texas Department of Health, she began studying acting again, which she has loved since childhood.

Laurie studied with Van Brooks, Dan Fauci, and Lainie Frasier, all exceptional teachers. She is currently represented by the Collier Talent Agency in Austin.

When she is not acting, Laurie is substitute teaching, writing and illustrating children's books, or volunteering reading to young children in community health clinics.
