IndiePix, Celebrating Independent Film

Dan Lamoureux

Dan is a native of the south suburbs of Chicago, Illinois and has been writing, producing, directing and editing his own films since the 8th grade. Dan received a Media Fellowship from Saint Xavier University and completed his BA as well as his first feature length project, My Very First Meth Lab, in the spring of 2002. Motivated by the desire to become a “real” filmmaker, Dan applied to Columbia College in Chicago’s prestigious MFA film program. He was accepted in 2003 and after a very productive and successful year of study, Dan had the honor of being the first “A” student ever to be thrown out of the graduate film program. Some members of the administration felt that Dan’s guerilla filmmaking techniques and his focus on unusual and comedic subject matter were inappropriate for such a respectable MFA program. Disappointed that he would not be able to study it in the second year of the school’s program, Dan decided to teach himself the art of documentary filmmaking. After reading a small pile of books and after watching a large pile of movies, Dan felt ready to begin work on his first documentary feature. That film, Nerdcore For Life, took more than three years to research, shoot and edit and stands as a comprehensive portrait of the birth of the Nerdcore Hip-Hop movement. Nerdcore For Life went on to screen in film festivals across the US and has been covered by MTV, Newsweek, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, NPR and The Onion to name a few. Today, Dan is a professional filmmaker and his production company, Crapbot Productions has just begun shooting a new documentary feature entitled “BBW,” which will profile plus-sized women who are breaking stereotypes about what “fat” women can and can’t do.
