Annie Howell

Annie J. Howell has written and directed several short fiction and nonfiction films and has exhibited them internationally on the film festival circuit, including screenings at SXSW, Newport, Full Frame, Clermont-Ferrand, Boston Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, MadCat and SilverDOCS. Her films have been screened on the Sundance Channel, PBS, and the Independent Film Channel. Recent work includes a short, TIA AND MARCO, commissioned by ITVS (Independent Television Service) for their inaugural online science fiction series, FUTURESTATES. Her web series, sparks-series.com, co-created with Lisa Robinson, is syndicated by thesundancechannel.com, where she also blogs on film and storytelling. Recent awards include a 2005 Screenwriters' Colony fellowship, a 2008 IFP Grand Prize Award in Digital Filmmaking from Panasonic, and a 2010 San Francisco Film Society/Kenneth Rainin Foundation grant, all for original screenwriting. She previously taught at The New School in New York City, where she was the Founding Director of the Graduate Certificate in Documentary Media Studies (ranked in its third year as one of the top ten documentary programs in North America), and at Duke University's Center for Documentary Studies and the Duke Program in Film and Video. In the summer of 2010, Howell co-directed a feature film, based on characters developed in the web series, SPARKS.
