IndiePix, Celebrating Independent Film

Shakespeare Collection

INDIEPIX is proud to present a collection of films on Shakespeare adaptations. Numerous filmmakers from around the world have been inspired by the Bard. Films on Shakespeare adaptations vary greatly in style and interpretation. Some are masterfully crafted works, some have a bizzare spin on Shapespearean classics and some are adapted to give the film a cultural flavor that is unique to the filmmaker's home country. Notable amongst the collection are Andrzej Wajda's - THE SIBERIAN LADY MACBETH - an adaptation of Nikolai Leskov's Lady Macbeth; director James Ivory's SHAKESPEARE WALLAH, a film about a struggling English troupe of Shakespearan actors touring India, based on an actual theater company called Shakespeariana. Few, if any, have matched the success of the great Laurence Olivier in translating the glory of Shakespeare's writing from stage to film. OLIVIER'S SHAKESPEARE is a collection of three such films. Watch Bollywood filmmaker Vishal Bharadwaj's MAQBOOL and OMKARA for their Bollywood-esque style treatment of Shakespeare's plays Macbeth and Othello. Set against a powerful Shostakovich score, Grigori Kozintsev's KING LEAR is a highly acclaimed adaptation of Shakespeare's tragic play. Also noteworthy is auteur Derek Jarman's THE TEMPEST which despite being radically unconventional has been hailed as one of the most successful adaptations of the Bard's works by several Shakespeare scholars.

Dozens of directors and hundreds of actors have tried to translate the glory of Shakespeare's writing from stage to film, but few, if any, have matched the success of the great Laurence Olivier. Often described, with perhaps a bit of hyperbole but plenty of good reason, as the 20th century's best actor, Olivier was the epitome of the&hellip…

Despite being radically unconventional, late auteur Derek Jarman's 1979 film has been hailed as one of the most successful adaptations of the Bard's works by several Shakespeare scholars.
