Mother's Day Collection

The modern holiday was first celebrated in the U.S. in 1907, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother. She then began a campaign to make "Mother's Day" a recognized holiday in the US. Although she was successful in 1914, she was already disappointed with its commercialization by the 1920s. Jarvis' holiday was adopted by other countries and it's now celebrated all over the world. Despite the market's oversaturation of the 'perfect mother's day present' there is still some viability to a holiday whose sole purpose is to celebrate the people who not only gave birth to you but are among those continuing the human race. Perhaps less grandiose in theme than that thought are these films that approach the mother in a much more intimate scope and through different genres all the while seeking out that universal understanding of 'the mother'.

From Entre Nos, where we see a mother desperate to protect her children from poverty and hopelessness to Beneath Contempt where a mother looks to raise her son up from his downtrodden state, there's plenty to see that will help those who don't know understand why Mother's Day is so popular in this country.
